World Mental Health Day

In honour of World Mental Health Day on October 10, we held a poetry and writing competition to bring forth a sense of unity, awareness and a message of hope. Shining a light on mental health through the art of poetry, Sameeha Naaz shares her winning poem.

Living
in a perpetual state of darkness,
with desolation as the lone true company,
in the periphery of loneliness that surrounds them.

They see a hand outstretched towards them,
afraid of holding on to it,
repeatedly being abandoned taught them not to trust
that this hand could be the same.

That you should not open up,
in case they leave you again.
You are only trying to protect this heart of yours,
this heart that is scarred and scared.

But sometimes, just sometimes,
surround yourself with people who understand you,
people who make you feel like you’re not so alone after all,
people who not only say they will be there, but show it
by extending their hand and holding yours.

And when you come across such people,

reach out to them,
they are worthy of your time and effort,
because they will stay,
so you don’t need to go through this alone.

Superb Sameeha looks like you have put a nice effort in this and I hope you keep putting out such good pieces of work.

This is so beautiful. This is one of the best poems I’ve read so far
